How a Multilingual Website Can Supercharge Your SEO

multilingual seo

You know how important digital marketing is for your business. Without SEO, you’re going to struggle to gain exposure in this online world of ours.

But what if you wanted to appeal to multiple countries? What if you wanted to try your hand at multilingual SEO?

Here I’m going to show you why a multilingual site, when done correctly, can help supercharge your SEO.

What Is Multilingual SEO?

First, I need to tell you what a multilingual site is.

In a nutshell: it’s a site that is optimized for multiple languages and/or for different countries.

Because SEO is so important, having content that is optimized for other languages helps ensure that international visitors will be able to find your site from their country.

Say you do business in France. You might want to think about having the option to translate your whole site for French speakers.

French is a good example as it’s spoken in countries that have more than one language, such as Canada.

By allowing the option for multiple languages, you will be increasing the potential for non-English speaking web users to visit your site.

Even if you don’t do business with other countries, a multilingual site is still beneficial. The beauty of the internet is that your site can (and probably does) attract visitors from all over the globe.

It’s all-inclusive form of SEO.

Creating a Multilingual Site

You might be thinking to yourself: “Wow, I don’t really want to create a lot of different sites with different languages.” Fortunately, you don’t have to.

As an example, if you were interested in a multiple language WordPress site, it’s possible to use machine translation tools to convert into different languages.

Do be wary though: it’s not always a good idea to rely heavily on Google Translate. While it’s a very powerful tool, it still has limitations. Some languages may be more difficult to translate, even with Google.

If you’re already familiar with a second (or third, or fourth etc.) language, then you may want to get involved in some additional keyword research.

It’s not always a question of translating your keywords into different languages. For the purposes of SEO, a multilingual site may use different sets of keywords and phrases entirely.

So you may also need to up your keyword game.
